Trends arise through copying and while sometimes we even speak of a ‘movement’ (“A tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a restricted period of time, or, at least, with the heyday of the movement defined within usually a number of years.”) there is the problem of over-exposure and loss of meaning which will rapidly make that trend ‘mainstream’ and thus untrendy.

We all know Andy Warhol’s soup can. Sadly there are many horrific appropriations of the famous silkscreen by the Pop artists. Here are 2 examples that are actually good.

Why? Because the street artists Banksy has appropriated it to make a statement about contemporary British culture. The agency Wieden + Kennedy have used the can which has become a symbol of American capitalist society through Warhol in order to make a new statement about American culture, just after the inauguration of President Obama in 2009.

Love this project! Designer Bea Correa is selling a range of rebranded FAKE handbags she finds on the black market. For this project she is authenticating faux products (mainly handbags) by branding them as FAKE and selling them under the brand name Fakewear. The aim is not to make a profit, but to promote discussion and raising awareness.

I am still thinking about collage. As I am a typography girl I started looking at typographic collages, and I found a few good ones actually. Maps using the names of places has become a fashionable thing to do (sure you’ve seen one, if not check here).

Using type as image is another way. Check out the art of Matthew Cusick, he uses maps to make images. The above image is another example where black and white type is arranged accoring to background colour. Kinda cool.

I’ll see how I can incorporate this into my project. So stay tuned!

This is a very successful “Work Hard & Be Nice To People” appropriation. It is an illustration that was done by Owen Gatley ,for the YCN HQ editorials for their Annual, 2010/11.

It is a good example of how an idea can be taken further. The artists simply ‘borrowed’ the idea in order to make an illustration of it. There is a reference to A.B.’s design by using a similar typeface and deliberate choice of ampersand as the title or description, but the text is aligned left. Without the actual words as a description the audience would probably not understand the illustration.

It’s a very nice illustration - I like it. A.B. seems to like it too.

Agreed?

On Collage & Photomontage
I have been thinking about collage...

On Collage & Photomontage

I have been thinking about collage today. We all seem to love collage (if done well), whether we are designers, artists or anybody, really.

Collage is actually the sincerest form of “cutting, pasting & plundering” in the sense that you ‘borrow’ any preexisting graphic, illustration, pattern, paper or newspaper that you can find and reassemble it into something new. It is the truest method of taking something and making it your own.

That method of working seems to be fine and accepted within the arts and within design.

Or are there any boundaries?

Thank you http://berlingotiere.tumblr.com/ for sharing this with...

Thank you http://berlingotiere.tumblr.com/ for sharing this with me!

I like this.

But I cannot help but wonder about these, what I call “command posters” and why they seem to “speak to people” (literally) in the way that they do these days? Granted, they are usually inspirational or motivational in some way, shape or form and that is always good. Additionally words (or typographic posters) are immediate, which seems to be a good way of communicating in our fast-paced world.

Back in the day motivational slogans to the public were printed on banners and posters and used as a form of political propaganda, like the Keep Calm and Carry On poster. Today however you see them coming up more often, designed and distributed by all kinds of people. I am not being critical about that in any way. I actually like them, a lot. But, I am wondering about this trend.

"Talent borrows, genius steals"

““Talent borrows, genius steals””

-
